.jpg) Caroline Chang, Minister of Public Health of Ecuador, cut the ribbon that re-opened the outpatient services and pharmacy at the Lorenzo Ponce Psychiatric Hospital.
The Health Minister highlighted the hospital’s progress and confirmed the National Government’s backing of this institution.
“We are facing new challenges, but we are ready to meet them. You can count on the support of the Government and of the Ministry of Health to strengthen your services and care,” indicated Dr. Chang.
The Health Minister also made mention of the agreements established with the hospitals pertaining to the Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil (Luis Vernaza, Maternidad Sotomayor and Dr. Roberto Gilbert), whose compliance has helped to meet the high demand for medical care in Guayas province.
Neuroscience Center The Director of the JBG, Engineer Óscar Orrantia, stated that the remodeling of the Outpatient Services area of the hospital is only the beginning of a series of steps that will soon turn it into a more specialized center.
“We hope that this first step leads us, in a lapse of four to five years, to converting this hospital into a great Neuroscience Center, which will be a national and international benchmark and the pride of Ecuador,” he stated.
Stanley Wright, inspector of Lorenzo Ponce, stated that currently new treatments are being tried to treat drug dependency, with the collaboration of highly trained personnel.
However, these are not the only advances being made at Lorenzo Ponce Hospital. According to the hospital’s technical director, Dr. Fabrizio Delgado, the institution’s strategic plan also includes modernizing the diagnostic, care and therapeutic services, expanding the area of short-term hospitalization and promoting a project focused on patients’ psychosocial rehabilitation.
Additionally, the hospital is developing a project for the treatment of addictive behaviors, working to open a center for cerebral research (epilepsy and sleep disorders), and establishing care and support networks among citizens, with the goal of bringing the hospital to the community.
Recognition During the event, the Director of the JBG presented a gold pin to the teacher Alfonso Uzhca, in honor of his fifty years of uninterrupted work at the Ponce Hospital. He is the founder of the Paint Therapy Workshop, which helps patients rehabilitate through painting.
Facts of interest: Lorenzo Ponce Hospital is the only center specialized in psychiatric treatment in the region. Currently, it has more than 600 permanent inpatients, 300 of whom have been abandoned by their families.
