Luis Vernaza General Hospital

The Luis Vernaza General Hospital dates back to the colonial period. It was founded in 1564 and is one of the oldest in Latin America. The present building was built between 1922 and 1940. It was named after Luis Vernaza, who served as a Junta Director from 1920 to 1942.

The hospital attends to people coming from all over Ecuador with professionals specialized in various medical and surgical areas. The extraordinary diversity of modern technology for diagnosing and treating patients makes the hospital unique in many ways.

The hospital is divided in two separate areas: clinical and surgical. Services are provided in a wide range of areas, including internal medicine, cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, neurology, ETN, gynecology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, nephrology, urology, general and orthopedic surgery, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery and proctology.

The Luis Vernaza Hospital is an authentic Teaching Hospital where doctors undertake both work and scientific research. The hospital has deservedly and justifiably been recognized by ONTOT (The National Institution for Organ and Tissue Transplants) as one of the best hospitals in Ecuador. Equipped with everything required to perform kidney transplants, the hospital has carried out more than 135 successful transplants in the last 30 years.

The Emergency area is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It attends to well over 50% of the casualties within the city and its surrounding areas.
