The original Psychiatric hospital was donated by the City Council to the Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil in 1881. Later, in 1909, a new building was constructed at the foot of Cerro del Carmen with financial support provided by Mr. Lorenzo Ponce. The hospital’s name was subsequently changed to recognize such generosity. In 1934, the study of Psychiatry and Mental Pathology was a key factor in converting the Hospital into a national teaching hospital. Later, it became a bona fide Psychiatric Hospital. In addition to the academic activities, a new infrastructure has been added to meet the demands of a growing service. Now, the Hospital can attend to approximately 800 patients. Its infrastructure comprises 1028 beds, X-ray machines, an outpatients section and a dental division. The first floor houses the Auditorium, where national and international professional specialists meet and medical congresses are held. These events represent a major scientific contribution to the development of the country’s current and future professionals. |
