This orphanage was founded in order to meet the needs of the growing number of young orphan girls. Mercedes Calderón de Ayluardo, inspired by her humane spirit and sense of solidarity, gave a large sum of money to make this home a reality. On October 2, 1899 her dream was fulfilled and an immense void was filled by helping this group of girls. In need of education, the girls have been provided with schooling thanks to the Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil, ever since the orphanage’s foundation. It originally housed 68 girls who, in addition to housing, received food, clothing, education as well as a true Christian upbringing. The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará run the establishment. It is currently home to 129 girls, who attend the following schools: Unidad Educativa Santa Luisa de Marillac, Unidad Educativa La Providencia y Academia Lola Arosemena de Carbo. |
