This girl’s school was named after the man who financed its construction, Manuel Galecio. Unfortunately, like many other buildings in Guayaquil, it burned to the ground during the Great Fire that occurred on October 5th and 6th, 1896. The girls were then transferred to the school, La Providencia, which was later destroyed in another fire on July, 1902. A new home was built in 1907. By 1910 the number of girls had grown. In 1951 a new location was built in the town of Alausí in the province of Chimborazo, where some land had been donated by Rosa Fiallos and Carmen Fiallos de Naranjo, who also gave a large sum of money for the construction of the home which took two years to complete. The Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil signed a loan contract with the Ministry of Public Education so that teachers could be provided to the elementary and high school, and under which the Ministry of Education was put in charge of paying the teachers salaries. The Junta has made one of the buildings the “Hogar de las Niñas”, a 130-bed dormitory that currently houses 120 girls, and which has dining halls, a chapel, a theater, playing fields and many other services. |
