An extraordinary landmark and revered resting place. The General Cemetery has provided a final resting place for past generation since 1843. Once located on the outskirts of the city, today it is a central landmark in Guayaquil, alongside the Cerro del Carmen, a hill steeped in Guayaquil's history. Monuments, mausoleums, niches, and vaults of the wealthy and needy cling to echa other in an irregular topography around the base of the hill. The city's poor are granted free funeral services and burial sites. Junta de Beneficencia proudly continues to provide complete funeral services while maintaining the highest standars in this magnificent resting place. However, due to its central location and the growing population, a new cemetery is being built-in in another location. |
